Every Thursday, Oxford has an antiques and craft market set up in Gloucester Green. The kids and had a bus pass from the night before, so I decided we should go out and see what they had to offer. Most mornings in Oxford seem to be pretty nice weather; the sun is out and shining and then later in the day it gets gloomy. Today was the opposite. We went to the market anyway, in the rain and very cold weather. I did not take any pictures there because it was just a little too hard to wrangle my kids, my purse and the umbrella. It was really awesome though. Lots of neat antiques, fresh produce, baked goods, and flea-market type items. Next time I’ll get a pic!
After the market, we headed down Cornmarket to meet Scott at the mobile phone store. YES! We finally have phones! They are cheap-o, non-data phones, but that’s okay. We can now communicate with one another and other people! It is hard getting used to a plain phone when you’ve had an iPhone for 3 years, though.
We ate a quick lunch of jacket potatoes at a quirky little cafe before heading down to the Bodleian Library to see if we could peek in at the old Divinity School. Today, no ceremonies were taking place, so they let us have a look. You can take tours (60 or 30 minutes), but children under 11 are not allowed, because the library is still in use for students to actually conduct their research. They do have special family tours on some Sundays that you book in advance, so we plan to do that later so we can view the Duke Humfrey’s’ library (the one used in the Harry Potter films). As it was, we were able to see the main lecture hall, which is used in the HP films as both the hospital wing and the dancing practice room in The Goblet of Fire. The kind gentleman who let us in said that it is 500 years old and is the first lecture hall built for that purpose for the university. It is truly beautiful!
Some of the treasures it housed are Thomas Bodley’s chest in which important documents were stored, and a chair made from wood of Francis Drake’s boat. Cool!
